Power Wheelchairs for Florence and Mr. Perez, Told by Amy Gordon

During our Mission Experience in Belize in 2022, I met Hez for the first time. Back then, he was the manager of the hotel that hosts our mission team, and we were grateful for his care and service. Now, he has become a precious friend and valuable part of our work in Belize.

When Hez was a young child, he became the primary caregiver of his father, Mr. Perez. Paralyzed from a work accident, Mr. Perez has spent many years confined to a wheelchair. Even with his limitations, Mr. Perez has continued to find purpose, continuing small construction projects on his home, tending to his garden, and spending time with his neighbors.

But Mr. Perez prayed for a day when he could have more independence.

That prayer was answered in a way only God could orchestrate. On October 21, 2024, a need for a power wheelchair came to me – not for Mr. Perez, but for a woman I had never met. Florence lives in Petén, Guatemala, and she has been paralyzed for twenty years.

For years, she had been relying on an 18-year-old electric wheelchair until it finally broke beyond repair. Her greatest mission was to be able to return to church, a place she longed to visit daily.

When the request first came in, I hesitated. It felt too big, and I didn’t know anyone who could help. Less than a week later, I ran into Mike, an old friend who works in medical equipment sales. He explained that he had recently been put in charge of a strangely unique task at work – getting rid of two power wheelchairs marked for disposal.

It was a miracle! Somehow, all the way in Henrico, Virginia, God had given me the opportunity to meet the desperate needs of two people around the world using someone else’s trash.

Within weeks, Mike’s company refurbished the chairs and shipped them. Mike generously covered part of the shipping costs and, soon enough, the chairs arrived in Belize. From there, Pastor Lord drove one chair to Florence in Guatemala.

She wept with gratitude saying, “ I thank God with all my heart and soul for this blessing. I don’t know who contributed, but He sees everything, and He will repay your generosity. Many obstacles were overcome, and I am eternally grateful.”

The second chair found its home with Mr. Perez, who had no idea that God was answering his prayer. For the first time in years, he moved around his yard with ease. He is able to go to the market, visit with his community, play with his dogs, and experience independence. What once seemed impossible has become his new daily reality.

Florence was right. God sees everything. He saw her in her desperate need and desire to be in His House. He saw Mr. Perez in his unspoken prayers for freedom and independence. He saw a way when it seemed impossible.
