More Than English Class | Step Into the Story

Jose’s Story

When I was 21 years old, I had to start all over. In one of the darkest times in my life, I moved to the United States away from everyone and everything I’ve ever known. As I settled into my new life, I let myself be consumed by all the wrong things. I was focused on alcohol and cigarettes and let my life become a total disaster.

After a year of living a wild life, I saw a poster for an English class in the breakroom at work. A group of my coworkers and I decided to visit the class to improve our English. That’s where I met the most wonderful people in the world! Amy, Madison, and Megan started out as my teachers in English class. I would have never guessed that today they would become my family!

From week to week, my friends slowly stopped coming with me to English class, but I continued. Then, the next semester, Megan invited me to return. This semester was different. Our conversations went from practicing English to talking about God. They invited me to join them at church on Easter Sunday and, throughout the worship, I felt a way I had never felt in my life. I couldn’t describe it, but I knew it was where I was meant to be.

As my 28:19 family continued to share the Word of the Lord with me, I made the decision to dedicate my life to God. God healed me in impossible ways, so I’ve left all my bad habits  and vices behind. I believe in myself and in my potential. And thanks to their love, support, and dedication, I can say that I know how to speak English, something that I never thought would be possible!

What I’ve found with 28:19 can’t be bought with all the gold on the planet! They taught me to believe in the Lord, to trust in His timing, and to believe that His plan is to love me. Now, I am a completely different person than who I was when they first met me. I am someone who cares for his family, who works hard, and who always offers a helping hand to whoever needs me.

Thank you Amy Gordon for giving me the love of a mother and always being there when I need her. Thank you Madison Gordon for helping me improve as a person and her dedication to teaching me another language. Thank you Megan Darby for inviting me to church. Without that, I wouldn’t have changed my life to follow the ways of the Lord. For that, I will always be eternally grateful.

Above all, I thank God that He put me on the perfect path to coincide with such wonderful people.
